[Review] Thinkpad T430u from a Linux perspective

Thinkpad T430u from a Linux perspective

What is he talking about? Versión en espanol (pronto...)

Overview

Recently I purchased a new computer. Being a Linux user when you plan to buy a new computer, you really want to know if your hardware is going to work out of the box.

I wanted to buy a computer that will last for a long time and that would have great specs. After long hours of research I came with two options:
  • The Gazelle professional from System 76, mainly because it comes with Ubuntu and everything works great.
  • The Thinkpad T430u from Lenovo, the model with the i7 processor and the nVidia graphic card.
At the end I decided to purchase the Thinkpad because it had some features I found very interesting.
Also, buying the Gazelle would be a little bit difficult because I live in France. So at the end I would end up paying the same price.

Hardware specifications

I have the 86148CU model of the T430u series. It comes with the following features:

  • i7 IvyBridge dual-core processor, 1.9GHz with TurboBoost up to 3.00GHz.
  • Intel 4000HD Graphics.
  • nVidia GeForce 620m 1GB with Optimus Technology
  • 4 GB of RAM
  • 126GB Toshiba SSD

Some other hardware specifications:

  • 3 cell battery, up to 7 hours (I get around 5 hours with TLP installed and using an Ethernet connexion)
  • 2 USB 3.0 ports
  • 1 SD card slot
  • Headphone/Microphone jack
  • Finger print reader
  • HDMI port
  • Mini Display port

What does that mean exactly? Well, sadly, some hardware is not going to work out of the box.

T430u and Ubuntu

First thing I did after getting my new computer: delete Windows and format the drive. I was happily surprised that I didn't had any problems with UEFI booting. I had so much troubles trying to make Ubuntu boot in a Dell XPS so I was expecting to make change some options in the BIOS but I could boot and install Ubuntu without problems.

During the installation process, I noticed that the UltraNav utility and the keyboard mouse worked really well. All function buttons worked well too.
The only problem, was that I needed to enable the proprietary drivers for WiFi, so I needed a wired connection to do that.

After enabling my WiFi connexion I did almost everything I mention in this entry of my blog. But I had to test some drivers in order to use all my hardware.

Enabling drivers

As I mentioned before, some of the things that comes with the computer aren't working out of the box.

First of all I wanted to test the graphic card that comes installed. As you can see in the image above I can't enable the drivers automatically. This happens with nVidia graphic cards that use Optimus Technology.

After breaking X like 5 times, I ended up finding the Bumblebee project. I installed Bumblebee using a PPA and I was finally able to properly use my graphic card and safe some battery life.
Here is a post about how to install Bumblebee and how to test it. +1 for this amazing project (+Bumblebee Project in Google+).

Second thing I wanted to make sure that was working was my finger print reader. I did some research for the packages I could install to use my finger print reader, and I found the Fingerprint Gui project.
There is a PPA I used and the configuration was very simple. I set it up so when I need to have special permissions I can swipe my finger or put my password. It works pretty well and even if you are using your system with tty1 (Ctrl + Alt + F1) you can still use the finger print reader.

Conclusion

I don't see why I couldn't recommend this computer. Honestly it works better with Linux that my previous machine. Hibernation works well and if I close the lid the computer Suspends. I had some issues enabling drivers but it wasn't very difficult to make my hardware work.

Sadly the model with the i7 processor is discontinued. And I can't say how you can enable the WWAN if you have one. But if you don't want all that fancy stuff you won't run into any problems and you could make everything work.

Thinkpads are popular for being great pieces of hardware, so if you want to invest in a good computer that will last for a long time I would recommend you the Thinkpad T430u. It may be expensive for some people, specially if you don't live in the US but if you can get yourself a computer like this one you won't be disappointed.

Here is a very very very detailed review, but with a Windows perspective.

What is he talking about? English version

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable
sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic

Y finalmente pueden instalar Bumblebee:

sudo apt-get install bumblebee virtualgl

sudo apt-get install primus

Luego pueden probar el rendimiento con esto:

vblank_mode=0 primusrun glxspheres

Vayan a "Properties"

Luego escojan "SET LAUNCH OPTIONS..."

[How to] Enable nVidia drivers with Optimus technology in Linux

Enable nVidia drivers with Optimus technology in Linux

¿De qué está hablando? Versión en español

Now that I actually have a computer with a graphic card, I can write about how to enable it, if it isn't recognized by your OS.

I have a nVidia GeForce 620m in my laptop and it isn't recognized because it uses the Optimus technology from nVidia.

Checking your device

First of all let see if your graphic card is recognized in a hardware level.
Use the command:

lspci

You can be more specific, combine lspci with grep.

lspci | grep 3D

Now that we have that, we can install the corresponding driver.

Downloading and installing Bumblebee

Bumblebee is a project that was born to enable Optimus technology. It is supported in most distros (Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva, Arch...). Since I am using Ubuntu I will show you how to install it using a PPA.

Important: You don't need anything extra, don't install nvidia-current and don't run any configuration file.

Use the official PPA from the Bumblebee website and update the packages:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable
sudo apt-get update

Make sure you have the linux headers package installed:

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic

And finally install Bublebee:

sudo apt-get install bumblebee virtualgl

Then reboot your computer and check if you don't have any errors.

Make sure that you have the option for hybrid cards enabled in your BIOS too.

Testing the graphic card

Now that we have Bumblebee installed we can check if it is actually running, since there isn't any User Interface.

Let's do some benchmarking first. Run the following command to test the GPU from the processor:

glxspehres

This program will show you a 3D animation you can check the FPS rate and more information. In my case here is the output of my computer:

Now let's make a test with Bumblebee and VirtualGL. Let's run glxspheres but in the nVidia card:

optirun glxspheres

Now that we can use the nVidia card we can improve the performance in order to save power and to get better rendering.

Note: You can actually see in the screenshots how the battery life drops when the graphic card is used.

Adding Primus for better performance

In order to get better performance  you can install another "bridge" that is going to be used by Bumblebee. Install Primus with the command:

sudo apt-get install primus

Then you can test the performance with this:

vblank_mode=0 primusrun glxspheres

(You need the vblank_mode option to get the maximum FPS rate)

Note: Again you can see that the battery life is reduced but not as much as when you run the program with optirun.

Running games with your graphic card in Steam

If you want to run your Steam games with your graphic card you just need to change some Settings in the Steam client.

Launch the client and go to your Library. Then select the game you want to launch and right-click in it.
Go to "Properties"

Then choose "SET LAUNCH OPTIONS..."

And enter the command primusrun %command%.

That's it! Your games will run in the graphic card.

What is he talking about? English version

sudo apt-get install eclipse

sudo tar xzvf android-sdk_r22-linux.tgz -C /opt

sudo chmod 777 -R /opt/android-sdk-linux

sudo ln -s /opt/android-sdk-linux/tools/android /usr/bin/android

Abran Eclipse y vayan a Help > Install New Software... > Add...

https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/

Escojan "Developer Tools" y denle click a Next>. Acepten los "Terms and Conditions" y escojan Finish.

/opt/android-sdk-linux

Denle click a Apply y luego a OK.

adb devices

¡Eso es todo! Disfruten del SDK y programen mucho.

[How to] Install Android SDK in Linux

How to install the Android SDK in Linux

¿De qué está hablando? Versión en español.

For this tutorial I am using Ubuntu 13.04 but the procedure is the same for all distros.

Note: I am not exactly sure about the permissions you need to give to the folders we are going to create. Feel free to change them. I gave all permissions so it will just work.

You will need Eclipse and Java installed. If you haven't got Eclipse all you have to do in Ubuntu is using this command (it will pull Java at the same time):

sudo apt-get install eclipse

Downloading the SDK for Android

First of all you need to get the SDK from the developer site of Android. Go this website and choose the last option: SDK Tools only.

Now you will need to extract those tools, and lets put them in the /opt directory.

sudo tar xzvf android-sdk_r22-linux.tgz -C /opt

We need to give permissions to this folder so Eclipse will be able to use the SDK.

sudo chmod 777 -R /opt/android-sdk-linux

Now we need to run the Android manager to download the packages we need.

cd /opt/android-sdk-linux/tools

./android

Be careful when you choose what you want to download because it takes a lot of memory. Normally you won't need anything extra if you want to run the latest Android version.

We can make a symbolic link because we are going to need this in the future.

sudo ln -s /opt/android-sdk-linux/tools/android /usr/bin/android

Using the manager

Now we want to make sure we can create a virtual machine running android.

Let's give all permissions to our configuration file. In order to let the SDK create a virtual Android device.

sudo chmod 777 -R  ~/.android

Launch the following command (make sure you created a symbolic link before):

./android avd

And create a new virtual device, if you don't have any, choose "New". You will see the different options that you downloaded with the SDK manager.

I recommend you to enable the GPU usage, the virtual device will run faster with that.
Launch the emulator and wait. It could take sometime to launch so don't panic. (Like I did)

Now we can install the plugin for Eclipse.

Installing the Eclipse plugin

Launch Eclipse and go to Help > Install New Software... > Add...

Choose Add... in the top right corner.

Then you will enter a name for the new software you are going to install, "Android" maybe. And in the URL section enter the following Location:

https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/

Choose the "Developer Tools" and then click Next>.
Accept the "Terms and Conditions" and then choose Finish. Eclipse will restart but you won't be able to use the SDK just yet.

Configure the path to the SDK

Go to Windows > Preferences > Android and configure the "SDK Location" to:

/opt/android-sdk-linux

And choose Apply then click OK. Restart Eclipse and the Android SDK will be good to go.

Creating your first app

If you want to create a new application with Eclipse go to New > Other... and choose "Android Application Project".

It will create the application automatically.

If you want to test your app in the virtual device you will need to launch the device first and Eclipse will install and run the app in the device.

You can install and launch the app in a real device but you need to launch adb with root permissions. Just use the following commands.

sudo adb kill-server

sudo adb start-server

And if you want to check if your device is recognized use

adb devices

And that's it! Enjoy the SDK.

[Tutorial] ¿Qué hacer luego de instalar Linux Mint 15?

¿Qué hacer luego de instalar Linux Mint 15?

What is he talking about? English version

No usan Linux Mint?

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

sudo -E wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update

sudo apt-get install app-install-data-medibuntu apport-hooks-medibuntu

No me gusta Cinnamon, quiero probar otra cosa

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

sudo apt-get install kde-full

sudo apt-get install mate-desktop

sudo dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb

sudo apt-get install chromium-browser

Transmission

He aquí a qué se parece:

Para instalarlo:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yorba/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install geary

Multimedia

sudo apt-get install non-free-codecs libxine1-ffmpeg gxine mencoder totem-mozilla icedax tagtool easytag id3tool lame nautilus-script-audio-convert libmad0

sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 && sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/./install-css.sh

VLC

sudo apt-get install vlc

 Clementine

sudo dpkg -i clementine_1.1.1~quantal_amd64.deb

sudo apt-get install -f

GIMP

sudo apt-get install gimp

Si quieren editar archivos RAW necesitarán este paquete extra:

sudo apt-get install gimp-ufraw

sudo apt-get install inkscape

OpenShot

sudo apt-get install openshot

sudo dpkg -i steam_latest.deb

sudo apt-get install -f

Luego Steam se va a abrir y se actualizará.

He aquí una imagen, se ve bastante bien si me preguntan.

Messenger

Pidgin

sudo apt-get install pidgin

Skype

sudo apt-get install skype

Cloud and backup

Dropbox

sudo dpkg -i dropbox_1.6.0_amd64.deb

Backups

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/jupiter
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install jupiter

Archive Management Apps

sudo apt-get install unace unrar zip unzip p7zip-full p7zip-rar sharutils rar

sudo apt-get install wine

Virtual Box

sudo dpkg -i virtualbox-4.2_4.2.10-84104~Ubuntu~raring_amd64.deb

Programación (o "maldición porqué no compila")

sudo apt-get install build-essential

sudo apt-get install clang

Geany

sudo apt-get install geany

Eclipse

sudo apt-get install eclipse

OpenGL

Si planean programar usando OpenGL van a tener que instalar el paquete freeglut primero:

sudo apt-get install freeglut3-dev

sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get autoclean
