[Linux User] Must have Android apps from a Linux perspective

Must have Android apps from a Linux perspective

¿De qué está hablando? Versión en español

If you are an Android user and a Linux user you may want to check some applications that are very interesting for your Android device.

In this post I will show you some of my personal favorites.

Also make sure you check out this post from time to time, I will update it with new apps and more cool stuff.

Firefox

If you want a good browser maybe you can try with Firefox. You can sync your passwords, bookmarks and history with your mobile device. To do that you just need to follow these steps:

In your computer go to Edit > Preferences > Sync > Pair a Device...

In your device go to Settings > Sync

Then a code will appear, enter that code in your desktop browser and your two browsers will be in synchronized.

Firefox in the Play Store

I think you can do the same thing with Google Chrome, I haven't used it but make sure you check that too and see what you prefer.

LibreOffice remote

A very nice app that I find very useful if you have to do some presentations and you use LibreOffice, is LibreOffice remote.

What it does is basically use your phone as a remote for LibreOffice but it will do more that just pass the slides.

Here are some screenshots of the applications
Also a photo:

To be able to use this tool you need to enable the Remote Control from LibreOffice. Go to Tools > Options > LibreOffice Impress and check the box that says Enable remote control.

I have only tested this app with the Bluetooth option. Here is how to do it:

1) Pair you device with your computer.

2) Launch the app in the phone, you should see the paired computer.
3) Try to connect. (This could take several tries :( )

4) Start the presentation.
5) Lose your mind.
If you want to test it yourself go the the Play Store

VLC Direct Pro

If you want to control your VLC media player with your Android device you can use VLC direct pro. This could be nice if you don't want to be near the screen.

Check the wiki for setup it may be tricky.

DroidCam

A really interesting app I found is DroidCam. You can use your phone camera as a web cam for your computer. Maybe your computer doesn't have a webcam or you want to show something in your place without having to unplug everything in your computer.

The setup is actually pretty simple: check the developer's page. You need to get the server that goes with the application, you execute it and set the connection between the devices. Then you will see that a new camera is available for Cheese or Skype for example.

AirDroid

Finally one of my favorites app is AirDroid. You can upload and download basically any file you want to your computer/Android. You also have some commands that allows you to send text messages, enable your camera, and many other things. Is very useful if you want to download a file really quickly without any cables.

Also is very simple to set up. You just need to connect to your local WiFi, enable AirDroid and go to the IP address that the program tells you in any browser. Then you just accept the connection in your device.
